The very first of the Astuvansalmi Rock Paintings were created around 5000 years ago on a rock outcrop on the shores of Yövesi Lake. At the time, water levels were much high, so only the top was exposed. But over the centuries, as the lake level lowered, generations of hunters returned here by boat to leave their mark. According to experts, the location was a shamanistic ritual site, where hunting ceremonies were performed to ensure bountiful hunts. The rock itself resembles a giant face, which might be why it was considered sacred by the people living here. Walking at the base of the rock, you'll be able to spot many of the 80 pictures that have been found here, including human figures, moose, boats, fish, lines, as well as hand and paw prints. But perhaps the most famous is the "Artemis of Astuvansalmi" - a rare depiction of a female hunter. Of course, with a beautiful lake right spread out at your feet, it's well worth exploring the hiking trails beyond the paintings.
