Amongst the well-preserved ruins and ongoing excavations, Roman life is brought to light through artefacts and events.
Settled in the 1st century BC, making it the oldest Roman settlement on the Rhine. During its heydey, it was a provincial capital, home to 20,000 people - half of whom could fit into its massive amphitheatre. After the fall of the empire, the city remained well preserved as now new towns were founded nearby throughout the centuries. Along with the surviving monuments, such as the theatre and amphitheatre, the museum exhibits the most important artefacts found in the city, including the silver treasure of Kaiseraugst, a hoard found in the fortress in 1961. The ruins also regularly host events that bring Roman traditions to life, including pottery and perfume making. You can check their full event schedule at http://www.augustaraurica.ch/en/
