Home to the same family for 500 years, this beautiful moated manor has secret rooms where Catholics once hid from persecution.
First built in the 13th century, Baddesley Clinton passed to the Ferrer family at the beginning of the 16th century, and remained their home until it 1940. Over the centuries, the Ferrers made their own additions and renovations to the house - from secret rooms to hide Catholic priests to stained glass windows bearing the family’s coat of arms. Today, the combination of bridge, moat, and crenelated gatehouse make Baddesley’s facade one of the most beautiful in England. Inside, visitors can explore the various rooms, which are feature centuries-spanning furnishings. Step into the 16th century Great Hall, the drawing room, chapel, library, and Henry Ferrers’ bedroom, and feel free to ask the friendly volunteers about the history of Baddesley Clinton. Outside, visitors can enjoy a walk through the gardens to admire the manor’s charming facade, and soak in the colors of the dahlia-bordered formal garden, or take a quiet stroll around the lake.
