Oman
Surrounded by a lush oasis, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the largest and most imposing citadels in the country.
Bahla Fort was first built by the Banu Nebhan tribe between the 12th and 15th centuries. Over the years, it was further expanded, with the Bait al-Hadith, or new house, being built in the 17th century by the Ya’riba dynasty, and Bait Al-Jabal being added in the 18th century. After extensive renovations, the fort has reopened to the public, offering a grand look at the country’s tribal past. There’s little in the way of information and signs, but the historic architecture and sheer scale of the structure are enough for most visitors. Keep an eye out for the traditional wind tower and medieval unfired mudbrick houses. From the top of the fort, visitors are treated to beautiful views of the palm-filled valley, surrounded by rocky peaks.
