Balzan

Originally a cluster of small dwellings and farms, this charming municipality has grown over centuries and become adorned with exquisite architecture.

About

Balzan is a quintessential Maltese village full of historical buildings that once housed influential figures. Notable structures include the former residence of Vincenzo Bosio, an officer of the Knights of St. John, and Casa Borg on Pope Pius Alexander Street. Take a leisurely stroll along Main Street and encounter traditional townhouses adorned with charming balconies and colorful doors, home to local hotspot Old Smugglers Bar. Balzan boasts a traditional Maltese square, locally known as the “pjazza”, inviting visitors to relax on comfortable benches and take in the cobblestoned streets. The centerpiece of the town is the parish church, the Annunciation of Our Lady, built in the mid-17th century. This Tuscan-style church takes the form of a Latin cross and features an elegant dome and single belfry that can be admired throughout the village. It hosts renowned artworks by Emvin Cremona and Giuseppe Calleja, and every second week of July, the village celebrates the parish’s lively feast. Balzan captivates with its historical architecture, serene atmosphere, and welcoming community, providing a delightful glimpse into traditional Maltese village life.
