Vietnam
Vietnam’s widest waterfall tumbles into the stunning blue waters of the river that marks the border with China.
Ban Gioc Waterfall is one of the most impressive and best known waterfalls in Vietnam, and at 300 meters wide, they’re the broadest in the country. The falls are part of the Quay Son River, which flows from China through a serene rural landscape backed by soaring karst peaks. Before visiting the three-tiered cascade you’ll first need to purchase a police permit (200,000d for up to 10 people) from the station beside the falls. Once you’re officially cleared, you can watch the falls from afar, or pay to ride a bamboo raft close enough to feel the spray on your face. Nearby is the Nguom Ngao Cave, which is often called the most beautiful in Vietnam for its many stupendous formations made even more impressive thanks to dramatic lighting (we’d recommend adding 90 minutes to your stop to visit these as well).
