Believed to be the world’s oldest rice terraces, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a mind-boggling example of human ingenuity.
The Banaue Rice Terraces were created as early as 2000 years ago by indigenous tribes using little more than their bare hands. In the following centuries, little has changed. The paddies are still irrigated by an ancient system in the rain forest above and villagers still subsisting on their rice harvest. To combat the worms, rodents, and other pests that can destroy the steps, locals use the same herbs and religious rituals as their ancestors - no pesticides here. Sometimes called the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, it’s said that if all the terrace steps were put end-to-end, they would circle half the planet. Today, tourism plays a major role in the survival of the terraces, with locals offering tours and homestays - the income from which helps them care for the delicate steps. While you can simply stop here to enjoy the view, making the demanding trek up and down the terraces with a guide is an immersive look into this timeless way of life.
