Peru
Accidentally discovered, purposefully preserved, one of the continent's oldest archaeological sites stuns in its complexity and ingenuity.
Bandurria may be one of the oldest archaeological sites in South America. Located just south of Huacho, near the Pacific coast, this site dates to 3200 BC. The site was stumbled upon in 1973 when the Santa Rosa irrigation project began. Unfortunately, the irrigation project destroyed some of the ruins and has been systematically chipping away at it ever since. Still quite an impressive structure, it's one of the continent's oldest ceremonial structures and proves the existence of urban life in 3000 BC.
