It’s said this ancient temple was built by a woman because its intricate carvings are too fine to have been made by a man.
Banteay Srei was built in the 10th-century in dedication to the god Shiva. Unlike most of the Angkor temples, Banteay Srei was commissioned by a Brahman rather than the king, and as such its buildings are of a more modest scale. However, what the temple lakes in size, it more than makes up for with ornamentation. Nearly every surface of the red sandstone temple is covered in impossibly intricate carvings, many of which are three-dimensional, depicting delicate women in traditional skirts holding lotus flowers, and detailed scenes from the epic Ramayana.
