The mysterious buildings of this UNESCO World Heritage Site are one of the world’s largest prehistoric necropolises.
The Bat Necropolis and Beehive Tombs remain somewhat of an archaeological mystery. Dating from between 2000 and 3000 BC, little is known about the culture that constructed the tombs. They are, however, regarded as among the first visible funerary markers in the region. Situated on a hilltop, the stone tombs blend into the rocky environment. The tombs are grouped in three main clusters, and exhibit the architectural advances of the culture that made them. The oldest have only a single entrance leading to a single chamber, while later tombs have two entryways and up to four chambers. While the tombs at Bat are the most famous, the nearby site of al-Ayn is the best preserved. Please note: there are no facilities, so bringing your own water is recommended.
