Batang Ai

Accessible only by boat, this remote park is home wild orangutans and indigenous tribesmen.

About

Batang Ai National Park is centered around Malaysia’s largest manmade lake. The surrounding 24 kilometers of lush rainforest are home to a variety of rare and protected animals, included Borneo’s endangered orangutans, which makes for an enticing reason to join a guided hike on one of the park’s trails. Also living on the banks of the lake are a community of indigenous Iban, who help conserve the park, and are happy to share their traditional way of life with visitors. Please note: it’s about a 2 hours boat ride to reach the park, which should be arranged in advance. For more information, please visit sarawakforestry.com/parks-and-reserves/batang-ai-national-park
