Bauska Castle

This picturesque complex is actually two distinct castles, where visitors can get an interesting look into the lifestyle of medieval nobility.

About

In the mid-15th century, the Livonian Brotherhood built a stone castle to solidify their control in the area, as well as guard the border with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. When the order was dissolved a century later, the castle became the property of the Dukes of Courland, who had a noble residence added to the site. In 1706, retreating Russian forces destroyed the castle and palace, and the site was left in ruins until the 20th century. Today, the older castle is still in ruins, while the Ducal residence has been restored and now hosts themed exhibitions, such as museum dedicated to the history of the castle, a look at the aristocratic fashions of the 16th century, and even interactive programs, such as a stately dance lessons. The on-site cafe provides a pleasant place to enjoy a snack while admiring the historic architecture and beautiful surrounding area.
