Beit She'an National Park

One of the hottest settlements on Earth, this ancient city is the best place in Israel to experience life in the Roman Empire.

About

Beit She’an was first settled around 4000 BC, and has been inhabited ever since. A significant metropolis during the Old Testament period, it was mentioned in the Bible as where the bodies of King Saul and his sons were hung. Under Roman rule, the city was made the provincial capital in the 4th century. After being devastated by an earthquake in 749 AD, the ancient city never regained its former glory. Today, visitors can climb the mound within the park to see the remains of the ancient Canaanite and Egyptian cities. Surrounding this are the well-preserved ruins of the former Roman city where you can see the streets, homes, stores, workshops, baths, and bathrooms of this ancient metropolis. The 7,000-seat theatre looks much as it did nearly 2,000 years ago, and remains in use today. At night, the Sound and Light Show brings the city to life by projecting videos onto the buildings and colonnade-lined street.
