Algeria
Delve into delightful caverns in Algeria’s largest cave network.
First discovered by the Berbers, the expansive Beni Add Ain Fezza Caves weren’t always a show piece. Originally local farmers took advantage of the cave’s constantly cool temperature to store their produce. And according to some sources, it was also used as a refuge by the local Mujahideen during the Algerian War. The caves were closed again during the Algerian Civil War, but after extensive restoration and preservation work, were reopened to the public in 2006 as show caves. And what show caves they are! Not only is Beni Add Ain Fezza the largest cave network in Algeria, but the smooth path leads through chambers absolutely dripping with ornamentation. Stalactites and stalagmites abound, and flowstones and cave pearls glisten under colorful lights.
