Italy
The region's largest castle encourages visitors to explore the grounds and try out their vast armor collection.
Originally built in the 12th century, the castle’s characteristic bastions were 16th century modifications for battles involving firearms. It’s strategic location made it the site of many battles, from when Trentino troops faced off against the Venetians in 1487, to the French revolutionists fighting the Austrians in both World Wars. Today, visitors can explore the courtyards and buildings of the fortress, including kitchens, bread ovens, cellars and storage rooms. A walk along the parapet walk offers panoramic views of the Val d’Adige and the valley leading to the Altopiano di Folgaria plateau. The castle museum houses a large armory with original or true copies weapons, all meant to be touched, giving visitors the rare opportunity to wear and handle helmets and armour.
