This stately manor was miraculously left exactly as its owners left it, even after the Communists took over.
Built in the 18th century on the site of an older Renaissance castle, Betliar Manor was amazingly left untouched after the Communist takeover in 1945. one of the most distinctive estates in the country. The estate’s 50 rooms have been preserved just how the Andrássy family left them, allowing visitors to view the lavish rooms, such as the historical library and winter garden, as well as the many objets d’art and souvenirs collected from travels, such as an Egyptian mummy and elephant head. Surrounding the manor is an 80 hectare English style park filled with rare trees, sculptures, and even and artificial cave. Tucked away in the grounds is a 19th century castle-inspired menagerie, which was once home to brown bear, lynx, and mouflons.
