Norway
As you drive down Norway’s route E3, it’s impossible to miss the shining silver statue of this majestic creature surrounded by forests and water features.
The Big Elk, also known as “Storelgen” in Norwegian, is the second-tallest sculpture of a moose in the world, after being beaten out by the Canadian “Mac the Moose” in 2019. Reaching a height of 10.3 meters, the Big Elk is located near the village of Atna in Stor-Elvdal, Hedmark. It was created by Norwegian artist Linda Bakke in collaboration with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to raise awareness about wildlife on the roads and promote driver safety. Stor-Elvdal is also home to Norway’s third-highest population of moose, making the statue a symbol of the municipality. Take a break at the rest stop, relax on the benches provided and marvel at the polished stainless steel figure as you stretch your legs in the serene surroundings. The Big Elk serves as a testament to the natural beauty of Norway and how humans can coexist harmoniously with its wildlife.
