Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi (also known as Akkerman) is located in the historical region of Bessarabia. The first traces of the city go back to the 6th century BC, when the ancient Greeks founded the city of Tyras. The city would survive the change of rules from the Romans to Byzantines and Ottomans to Ukrainians. The city has several sights highlighting this historical heritage, with the most important being the 13th century Akkerman fortress. Despite its age, it is regarding as the best-preserved fortress in Ukraine.
