Take yourself on a captivating journey through the dramatic history of resistance fighting in the very region where the final battles of World War II unfolded in Europe.
Amidst the Matrefjella mountains near Bergen, the Bjørn West Museum commemorates the bravery and ingenuity of the 259 soldiers, fondly known as ‘the white angels’, who established a formidable military presence just behind the German forces. Immerse yourself in the museum’s extensive collection of weaponry, equipment and personal artifacts belonging to the Bjørn West soldiers, and browse evocative photographs, informative texts and a compelling film. Learn about the soldiers’ enduring spirit in the face of harsh conditions, including treacherous blizzards, frigid temperatures and scarcity of provisions. A guided bus tour from Marte to Stordalen Fjellstove will take you through the story, or combine it with a museum visit and walk to the headquarters of the Bjørn West organization. Here, a commemorative standing stone pays tribute to the six fallen soldiers of Bjørn West and Torgeir Stordalen, the lodge's owner. The Bjørn West Museum welcomes visitors from May to October, with varying opening hours that can be found on the website: https://bjornwest.museumvest.no/english/. An adult entry fee is NOK120.
