Bokor Hill Station

Currently being redeveloped into a luxury resort and casino, this colonial-era retreat caused the deaths of 100s of workers and was a Khmer Rouge stronghold.

About

Bokor Hill Station was built by the French as a luxury mountain resort in the 1920s, costing an estimated 1000 lives in the construction process. However, during the First Indochina War in the 1940s the site was abandoned. After being briefly revived as a casino, the Khmer Rouge entrenched themselves at Bokor Hill, and remained there into the 1990s. Today, the site is once again active as a casino, with the outbuildings in various states of disrepair - the main building has recently been renovated for use as a hotel, while the church hasn’t been touched. Even though it’s history isn’t being preserved or advertised, the Bokor Hill Station is still a great place to see colonial architecture and admire the panoramic views offered by its hilltop position.
