Malaysia
This caring center rescues the world’s smallest bears from captivity and fosters them in their natural environment.
The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre is the passion project of biologist Dr. Wong, who opened this rehabilitation center after seeing the deplorable conditions Malaysia’s native Sun Bears were being kept in. With the help of government agencies, Wong opened the BSBCC on a 2.5 ha site next to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre - his inspiration for a rehabilitation center. Today, the Centre is home to 44 rescued ex-captive sun bears, which enjoy large forested enclosures and proper care to facilitate their release into the wild. At the BSBCC, visitors can see the world’s smallest bear in its natural habitat from viewing platforms and raised walkways, and learn about both the bears and how the center is helping them.
