Indonesia’s largest Buddhist temple compound and UNESCO World Heritage Site is a stunning, three-tiered architectural masterpiece in central Java.
The Borobudur Temple Compounds consist of the Borobudur, Mendut and Pawon temples dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries in an impressive display of architecture and religion. The three-tiered structure of Borobudur reflects the Buddhist cosmological belief in three realms of the universe: desires, forms, and formlessness, respectively. Five concentric square terraces surround the pyramidal base and a grand stupa crowns the top of Borobudur. Visitors have the opportunity to ascend to the top of the temple by obtaining a designated time slot. The temple allows eight hourly time slots each day, starting from 8:30 am and ending at 3:30 pm. Tickets for climbing the temple structure can be purchased either on-site or online through the official Candi Borobudur ticket website.
