Some quirks of erosion formed a series of unusual holes in this dramatic river canyon.
Bourke's Luck Potholes were formed over thousands of years as swirling eddies of water burrowed their way into sandstone bedrock. These unusual formations were named after the prospector John Bourke, who was the first to proclaim there was gold in the region, though he himself never found any. Bridges and platform on the rocks above give visitors a bird’s-eye view of the vivid landscape below. Because they’re filled with different levels of soil, each pothole is a different color. For those who’d like to learn more, there’s a small geological museum, while short walking trails give you plenty of space to stretch your legs.
