Bali's only Buddhist monastery marries architecture from the two cultures into a serene retreat.
Founded in 1970, Brahma Vihara Arama is the only Buddhist monastery in predominantly Hindu Bali. The monastery’s architecture is still very much Balinese, with its bell tower, door guardians, and intricately carved dark stone buildings bearing Buddhist accents, like lotus flowers, and of course, Buddha images. There’s even a mini replica of Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist archaeological site. The monastery’s tall pine trees, trimmed lawns, groomed flower gardens add an air of tranquillity to the libraries and meditation chambers, which are often open to visitors.
