Austria
Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau, one of the oldest towns in Austria, which lies across the Inn River close to the German border.
The house containing the apartment where Hitler was born has now been converted into the ‘House of Responsibility’, a museum that covers the crimes of the Third Reich. Fortunately, Braunau am Inn, with a history that dates back to 1120, does not need to rely on its most infamous inhabitant in order to attract visitors. This picturesque Salzburg-style town has something to offer everyone, with the Church of St. Stephan being the most popular visitor attraction. Like many Austrian churches, this fifteenth-century church is renowned for its beauty and although the initial impression may be one of simplicity, the whole of the church is decorated in works of art that date back to the period of its construction. Visitors are advised to “Look up” when exploring the knave in order not to miss the amazing gothic-ribbed ceiling and the tops of the pillars that are exquisitely decorated with the apostles and angels.
