This charming little community was built to provide a place for women who didn’t want to deal with the absolutes of marriage or a convent.
Founded in the 13th century, Breda’s Begijnhof was inhabited by single women who didn’t accept the social norms of the day. Rather than get married or devote themselves to monastic life, Beguine proved a third option: to live a good an obedient life with like-minded women. In the 16th century, the site was placed under the personal protection of the Counts of Nassau, which preserved the community through the centuries. Today, visitors can enjoy the historic buildings that make up this serene community, many of which date back to the 16th and 17th centuries, while learning about the unique lifestyle and history of its female residents.
