The South Island’s biggest wildlife sanctuary is a pest-free paradise for endangered native wildlife.
The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary opened in 2018 after a 6-month campaign to rid the entire 700 hectares of invasive pests, and erect a 14.4km predator-proof fence. Some species of birds saw their populations rise by 400% due to the absence of rodents. Now open to the public, the park features a visitor centre which has displays detailing the history of the area and the conservation project, and maps are available to help guide you along one of the many tracks. The Valley Floor Loop Track is their most accessible, being suitable for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Guided tours are also available when booked in advance.
