Brunei Darussalam
Enter this captivating repository of Brunei’s rich maritime history, paying homage to the nation’s role as a renowned trading center in the past.
The Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum in Kota Batu will entice you with its maritime marvels from the moment you enter its doors. Resembling a ship from the front view, the entire building itself has a striking design that invites you to step inside. In the main hall, you’ll be greeted by the impressive skeleton of a 15th-century Chinese sailing ship, adorned with ceramic vessels. This shipwreck, discovered by divers in 1997, marks a crucial discovery in Brunei's maritime history. The Brunei Shipwreck Gallery showcases artifacts and maritime craftsmanship from various eras, totaling over 13,000 items retrieved from the shipwreck. Among the exhibits are crude singburi (stoneware jars) and exquisite Ming ceramics from China, as well as porcelain from Vietnam and Thailand, which would have been traded in Brunei for local products like spices, rattan, sago, and camphor. The Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum is free to enter and open Monday to Sunday from 9AM to 5PM, closed from 11:30AM to 2:30PM on Fridays.
