This hidden gem among the island’s many Buddhist temples, Budugallena Forest Monastery, is a place of profound tranquility and natural beauty. With a history dating back to around 180 BC, it's believed to have been constructed by a distinguished army general of King Kavanthissa, adding to its historical importance. Over 60 rock caves, bearing ancient drip ledges, dot the grounds, and although many now rest beneath the lush vegetation, some are still inhabited by devoted monks who come to meditate and reflect. The monastery's atmosphere is one of quiet reverence. Wooden stumps, suspended within the monastery halls, signal the monks residing in the scattered caves throughout the surrounding jungle, creating a unique and contemplative environment. Budugallena Forest Monastery is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered, offering a peaceful retreat within the heart of Sri Lanka's wild and untouched landscapes.
