Pack a picnic and enjoy scenic vistas in 300 acres of National Park nestled along the Illinois River!
Buffalo Rock State Park is a hidden gem situated on the north banks of the Illinois River. As far as State Parks go, it’s fairly small, but still mighty with its stunning cliffside views and ample hiking opportunities. Legend has it that Buffalo Rock was used by the Native Americans who once lived here to capture buffalo. The parks colorful history goes on to include religious cults come and go, and it even housed a sanatorium in the early 1900’s! Today, it’s home to two resident bison and the Effigy Tumuli, an earthworks exhibit by artist Michael Heizer. These five epic animal sculptures are made entirely from mounds of earth. To see them, follow the Woodland Trail through the depths of the park. At ground level, they blend in with natural surroundings, emphasizing the harmony between man and nature. Or, if you're more the panorama type, stroll the riverside River Bluff Trail to reach two observation decks offering spectacular views across the water!
