Ireland
From medieval feasts to a pre-industrial village, this historic castle and grounds proudly preserves several centuries of Irish history.
Bunratty Castle was built in 1425 on the site of an even older fortification and was made the seat of the powerful O’Brien clan in the early 16th century. In the 19th century, the castle was only used intermittently, and needed four years of restoration work when the 7th Viscount Gort purchased it in 1956. Lord Gort filled Bunratty with his collection of furniture, tapestries, and artwork dating from around 1600 to give visitors a glimpse of Ireland’s noble past. Along with the obligatory gardens, the grounds of Bunratty Castle host a Folk Park where over 30 buildings, including a pub and school bring a 19th century village to life. For a real taste of the Middle Ages, Bunratty Castle offers a Medieval Banquet where visitors can enjoy a four-course meal while being entertained by the Bunratty Castle Singers (add extra time for this).
