This sprawling coal mine is now a modern cultural center that hasn’t forgotten its roots.
The C-Mine is a unique cultural center that’s taken residence in Genk’s former Winterslag. The mine’s various buildings have all been repurposed, such as the visitor’s center located in the old electrical building, an art space in the old mining tunnels, and a massive cultural center in one of the old industrial buildings, which now holds concerts, plays, and other installations. There’s also a unique labyrinth made by architect Gijs Van Vaerenbergh where visitors can lose themselves in over 3,000 feet of surreal corridors. On the immersive C-mine expedition, visitors are brought into the mine itself to experience what it is like to be a mine worker in a very realistic way, and can even opt for the virtual reality experience to be transported back in time to see through the eyes of a 1950s miner.
