Argentina
Get lost in an enigmatic village of distinct architecture and rich indigenous heritage.
Thanks to its signature white buildings, Cachi is without a doubt one of the most recognizable places in Argentina. Even getting to the village is an adventure in itself, due to the epic narrow serpentine road which lies through a mountain range – a job for experienced drivers only. Once you arrive in Cachi, you won’t want to miss exploring its streets to gaze on the well-preserved colonial architecture, and walking around the town’s main square, Plaza 9 De Julio. Cachi is home to one of the best archeological museums in the country, Museo Pío Pablo Díaz, where visitors can learn about the pre-Hispanic history of the region (open every day except Monday, and the entrance fee is only about 0,5 EUR, descriptions are comprehensive but in Spanish only so it is recommended to take a tour; it is recommended to verify opening hours in advance). Next, explore the Saint Joseph Church, built in the mid-18th century (pay attention to the ceilings and confessional, built with the wood of the Cordon cactus). Lastly, expand your palette and try goat stew (or llama stew, if you’re brave enough) and, of course, empanadas, paired with a glass of wine. Important note: it is not recommended to visit Cachi during bad weather, especially during or right after heavy rain.
