Puerto Rico
Feel the Puerto Rican pride in the many museums that fill this historic city.
Nestled in a fertile valley, Caguas has been an agricultural hub for 2000 years. Farming, along with gold, silver, and copper mines established by the Spanish in the 18th century bestowed the city with a wealth of beautiful buildings and a history the locals take pride in preserving. Head to the main square to admire some of the charming colonial landmarks, including the cathedral and colorful Old City Hall. Inside the latter is one of the region’s most important museums, which covers Puerto Rico’s history from the Taino to the North American invasion. Nearby, you’ll find Puerto Rico’s only Tobacco Museum, which showcases the island’s history of tobacco cultivation. Local artisans show how cigars are made, and you can of course buy some to bring with you. There are a number of other museums worth visiting as well, including the Abelardo Diaz Alfaro Pink House, a 19th century mansion filled with period furniture, and the Museo de Artes Populares de Caguas, which exhibits arts and crafts from Puerto Rican artisans.
