Cahuachi Pyramids

These hilly pyramids were the ceremonial center for the ancient Nazca culture.

About

The massive religious site of Cahuachi was the centre for pilgrimage of the ancient Nazca culture, which flourished from 100 BC to 750 AD. Consisting of over 40 pyramid mounds, this holy site had a permanent population of almost zero but during times of religious ceremony thousands would gather here. The vast majority of these pyramids, abandoned by 500 AD, are actually built out of the hills themselves, and all of the structures are made of earthen bricks. Despite being a haven for archaeologists from all over the world in the 19th century this amazing site has, sadly, fallen prey to looters over the years too. Even so, 1500-year-old mummies and artifacts are still being found in this mystical place.
