Romania
Learn about the local folk traditions, from the UNESCO-listed Transylvanian practice of fortified churches, to the best way to store cured meats.
Built as a noble residence in the 13th century, the fort eventually was transformed into a chapel, and was built up by the local Saxon community under Hungarian rule. Today, the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with a few other Transylvanian villages with fortified churches. Dominated by the original donjon, visitors can explore the grounds, visit the museum exhibiting traditional folk-crafts, head down to the wine cellar, or climb the steep stairs to the top of the bell-tower. At the top, you’ll learn about a very Romanian tradition - it’s where the locals hang their bacon, meats, and lard.
