Built using blood-money, this water-castle was refined over the centuries by its aristocratic owners.
Built on the ruins of a medieval castle in the 16th century, Cannenburch Castle is best known because of its infamous founder Maarten van Rossum. Employed as field marshal for Charles, Duke of Guelders, Van Rossum was a notorious ruffian carved his way through Holland and Brabant, plundering as he went. The riches he accrued from this bloody business allowed him to build several fortresses and country estates. Cannenburch Castle remained in his family for the next 300 years, during which time they refined, expanded, and remodelled the castle to create a luxurious noble home. Today, visitors can enjoy the castle’s authentic 18th century interior, which is richly adorned with paintings, porcelain, and furniture, many of which are original to the castle. One of the most unusual pieces is the 17th century baptismal cup of Elbert van Isendoorn, which is made out of silver-plated coconut - at the time something very exotic, and thus, very precious.
