New Zealand
Despite its name, this path offers a pleasant walk along the pristine shore teeming with wildlife and offering spectacular views of the nearby countryside.
Named by the famed captain James Cook after his ship was blown far from the cape, the Cape Foulwind Walkway showcases the area's natural beauty. The 3.4 km long walkway allows visitors two options; a shorter walk to the nearby seal breeding colony or a longer walk to the lighthouse. Along the walk you can learn about the history of the Maori in the area and their own sea exploration, thanks to the inlaid panels among the path. Much wildlife can be seen along the path as many animals nest along the shore. The seal colony, which is only a few meters in, is populated all year round with a great number of seals. Dolphins, whales and little blue penguins also populate the area but are much harder to spot. What is easy to see are all the panoramic views of the nearby mountains and the coastline that truly encapsulate the rugged beauty of New Zealand’s wilderness.
