Australia
Australia’s oldest and most important lighthouse is a picturesque monument to maritime safety, with great views and a fascinating history to boot!
Built 90 meters above the sea in 1848, Cape Otway Lightstation was the second lighthouse ever built in mainland Australia, and when it was decommissioned in 1994, it held the record of the country’s longest operating. In that time, 8 ships wrecked off the coast (though two of these were from striking German mines during World War II), which are commemorated by a statue on the way to the lighthouse. It’s also not uncommon to see wild koalas on the trail, so keep an eye out! Along with getting amazing views from the lighthouse balcony, you can learn more about how it operated and the stories of the shipwrecks from the passionate guides. Then you can discover Australia's secret war history from WWII at the historic telegraph station built or learn a bit about indigenous culture at the Aboriginal meeting hut.
