This elegant 19th century lighthouse was manned around the clock to warn passing ships of the dangerous rocky coast below.
The Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse was built in 1864 to warn ships passing at night of the dangerous rocky headland. Up until the 1970s, the lens was turned with a clockwork system, which required the lighthouse keeper to manually wind it every 3 hours. Though now fully automated, a team of keepers still man the Victorian lighthouse to maintain a constant radio watch, and perform meteorological duties. The hike up to the lighthouse rewards visitors with a beautiful view of the rocky coastline and undulating Indian ocean. While the lighthouse is supposed to be open to visitors Monday to Friday from 10:00 – 12:00 and then from 12:30 – 15:00, it’s best to call ahead as these hours aren’t always observed.
