Open to the public for over a century, these show caves are so splendid they're often used as a wedding venue!
Capricorn Caves were discovered by Norwegian John Olsen in 1881, and, having seen the potential and claimed the land, opened it up to the public in 1884. Capricorn Caves are one of the largest privately owned cave systems in Australia and have been so tastefully managed that they have won numerous eco-tourism awards. The popular Cathedral Cave tour departs on the hour, takes an hour, and involves walking on good, well-lit paths, and is even wheelchair accessible. So good is the setting and the acoustics in the limestone Cathedral Chamber that weddings and a twice-yearly operas are held here. If you arrive at the right time of year you may even see insectivorous bats flitting about their underground home. A visitor’s centre is present with interesting facts about the community, geology, and bats of the cave and it’s surroundings, and a kiosk offers refreshments.
