Peru
This 5,000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage Site was one of the world’s first cities, its pyramids built around the same time as Egypt’s.
Caral was built around 2600 BC, making it one of the world’s first urban civilizations alongside those in Egypt, China, India, and Mesopotamia. Along with residences, palaces, and temples, Caral had an amphitheater, and in an interesting parallel to the world’s other major civilizations, 6 monumental pyramids built around its central plaza. Archaeological findings showed it a peaceful society and a large collection of carved bone instruments points to a community with time for recreation. Around 1800 BC, the city of 3,000 was simply abandoned and left to the elements. Despite being the model for the subsequent Andean cultures that would rise and fall for the next 4,000 years, Caral sees relatively few visitors, meaning you usually have the site almost to yourself. Along with its building’s Caral boasts one of Peru’s most significant geoglyphs, resemble a terrified old man, which has been found in other locations in Peru.
