Cardrona Bra Fence

Backed by beautiful scenery, thousands of bras of every shape and size blow in the breeze to raise awareness for breast cancer.

About

The Cardrona Bra Fence was born sometime between Christmas and New Year’s, when four bras mysteriously appeared on the fence in Central Otago. More bras soon joined, and despite objections by some of the more conservative locals, the bra fence soon became a major roadside attraction. In 2006, the local council even decreed the original fence along the highway a "traffic hazard", so the bustiers took up new residence on the driveway to Kelly Spaans and Sean Colbourne's horse trekking and quad biking business "The Cardrona". Whatever the intent of the original four bra hangers, the fence is now a monument to breast cancer awareness, and asks visitors to add their own bra to the collection and make a donation to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. For female visitors wearing a brassiere to precious to part with, you can even mail a bra to the Spaans and they’ll add it to the fence!
