Italy
This charming medieval town, with its defensive wall and impressive castle has been protecting a fascinating secret for centuries: an ancient Etruscan settlement!
For years, historians thought Castiglion Fiorentino wasn’t established until the late Middle Ages. However, recent excavations have uncovered the remains of an ancient Etruscan settlement. During the Middle Ages, the town was rebuilt and refortified, and even today is still nearly entirely surrounded by its city walls. From atop the semi-ruined tower of the town’s medieval castle, visitors are rewarded with stupendous views of the Tuscan countryside, while the Civic Museum of Archaeology and Excavation next door showcases ancient Etruscan artefacts, and the partially reconstructed sanctuary from around the 5th century BC. The impressive Collegiate Church houses a sacred art museum with works from the 15th through 17th centuries, while the art gallery of the Church of Sant’Angelo showcases precious jewellery from the 13th century and some fine paintings by Margarito, Taddeo Gaddi, Bartolomeo della Gatta and Giorgio Vasari.
