Castle Helmond

This well-preserved water castle provides a picturesque backdrop for weddings, contemporary art, and a museum.

About

Built in the 14th century as a replacement for an older fortification, Castle Helmond proved a worthy defense, successfully weathering several sieges in the 1600s. In 1921, the castle was sold to the local government by its last Lady to be used for municipal purposes. Respecting her wishes, Castle Helmond served as town wall from 1923 until the 1970s. Today, visitors can explore the castle’s halls where original stucco ceilings and fireplaces provide a historic setting for the castle museum where the castle’s past is brought to life through art, artefacts, exhibits, and modern audio-visual presentations. The castle is also used as an exhibition space for contemporary art, providing a unique juxtaposition of old and new.
