Named after Tarifa’s medieval saviour, this medieval castle is a living monument that also offers panoramic ocean views.
Built in the 10th century as a Moorish citadel, the Castle of Tarifa is known locally as the Guzmán el Bueno Castle in honor of the local governor-turned-Reconquista hero. In 1294, Muslim forces held Guzmán’s son captive, and offered to trade him for the castle. Rather than give up his town, Guzmán threw down his own knife for them to kill his son with. Today, the castle’s position on a high outcrop offers visitors stupendous views of the coast, and Africa. While walking the castle’s ramparts, halls, and rooms visitors will also see the ongoing excavation and restoration work that is uncovering and preserving its rich history. The castle’s museum is a well-documented exhibition on its role in the past, as well as the weapons and armor involved.
