Castle of Torres Novas

The defensive walls of this once great castle now guard a scenic park rather than a royal residence.

About

While there’s no definitive record of the origins of the castle in Torres Novas, an Arab fortress stood on the hill in the 12th-century, and after being conquered by D. Sancho I in 1190, it was reconstructed and reinforced. The massive medieval wall, with eleven towers and the 14th century house of the warden, now encloses a pleasant and well-kept garden - the perfect visual juxtaposition between war and peace. Visitors can even scale the walls to gain a great view of the city and surrounding area.
