Step into Winterfell’s courtyard at this unique double-facade castle.
Castle Ward was built in the 18th century by. Bernard Ward and his wife, Lady Ann Bligh. Having very different architectural tastes, they did what any healthy couple would do when constructing their new manor - split it in half. Ward had the entrance side done in a classical Palladian style, while the opposite side is ornate Georgian Gothic - and they continued this divide down the center with the interior decor. Walk the beautiful grounds and pleasure gardens to admire both facades before touring the interior (get your free tickets at the stable yard) to see the eclectic decor and learn more of the house’s history. Speaking of the stable yard, it’s the main reason many visitors come to the castle - and it’s not for the homemade Dexter beef sausage rolls. Game of Thrones fans are always giddy to step into the Winterfell courtyard. For more information, please visit https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/castle-ward
