Portugal
One of the oldest monuments in Portugal, the Esposende hills provided shelter and protection for millennia.
Artefacts dating as far back as the 4th century BC have been found at this fortified village hidden in the pine groves of Mount St. Lourenço. The stone houses date back to the 2nd century BC, and many were accessed by paved paths, and guarded by three walls. Before the Romans even arrived in the area, this settlement was building communities with roads and central courtyards. Though it was abandoned for some time, the hill’s strategic position offering views of the Atlantic provided the perfect position for a 14th century bastion.
