This UNESCO World Heritage Site gives an invaluable look at one of mankind’s very first permanent settlements.
Catalhoyuk was a major settlement during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, between 7400 - 5200 BC. During this time, mankind transition from being nomadic hunter-gatherers to permanently settled farmers, and Catalhoyuk is one of the best sites in the world preserving the development of early society. At the eastern mound, you can see eighteen levels of Neolithic civilization, occupied from 7400 to 6200 BC, which includes wall paintings, reliefs, sculptures, and other decorative elements. The western mound was settled from 6200 to 5200 BC, and gives insight into the evolution of cultural practices. At both, you’ll notice there are no streets - the buildings were accessed through the roof!
